Creating Canopy Brings Trees to Philly Neighborhoods

Penn is dedicated to promoting biodiversity and ecological resilience both on campus and beyond. The Creating Canopy program is one example of how we put this dedication into action. In May of 2022, Penn gave away 100 free trees as part of our Creating Canopy program to Penn staff and faculty living in Philadelphia.
Through a partnership with TreePhilly and with support from Morris Arboretum and Penn’s Landscape Architecture team, this program promotes greening in Philadelphia. Penn has also been named a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the thirteenth year in a row, providing further evidence of our commitment to ecological stewardship.
Ten of each of the following trees were included in this year’s giveaway: • American Persimmon • Arkansas Black Apple • Black Gum • Cherokee Brave Dogwood • Chicago Hardy Fig • Liberty Apple • Moonglow Magnolia • Rising Sun Redbud • Sassafras • Swamp White Oak
Tree recipients got creative this year, picking up trees on foot, bike, in by car.
