MLK Jr. Day Environmental Justice Event Examines urban greening and community safety

In partnership with the Office of Social Equity & Community and University City (UC) Green, Penn Sustainability hosted the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Environmental Justice event on Thursday, January 20, 2022. Kiasha Huling, Director of UC Green; Lori Hayes, Director of Urban Forestry at the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Parks & Recreation; and John MacDonald, Professor of Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania engaged in a virtual panel discussion moderated by Scott Filkin, Director of Penn's Office of Social Equity and Community, where they discussed the important relationship between urban greening and community safety and well-being, the inequities in access to urban greenspace for communities of color, and local lessons from West Philadelphia.
