The Green Purchasing Award program recognizes the outstanding contributions of an individual or team that significantly advance the development of sustainable purchasing practices at Penn. Past "Bright Green Ideas" have included:

  • Establishment of an ultra low temperature, or ULT, -80 Freezer Rebate Program (2015)
  • The purchase and installation of reusable, plastic sign holders for waste and recycling updates made by the SAS’s Green Team (2016)
  • The development of an Event Zero Waste Policy for large Wharton events (2017)
  • The creation of a Furniture Reuse and Recycling system in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) that strives to divert used furniture from landfills (2018)

“With Penn’s dedication to environmental sustainability, it’s important to acknowledge the outstanding contributions being made at the University. We work in a decentralized purchasing environment with daily buying decisions that are made at the department level,” said Mark Mills, executive director of Penn Purchasing Services. “Given this model, it’s important to recognize our colleagues in the Schools and Centers who have embraced sustainability in their purchasing choices.

Be sure to nominate the "Bright Green Ideas" in your school or center starting on Monday, April 22. Learn more about nomination.

Honorees are announced at the annual Purchasing Services Supplier Show in September.
