Morris Arboretum Visitor Center, Morris Arboretum & Gardens 100 E Northwestern Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118
Whether you're considering doing your own stonework or hiring a professional, we'll cover the basics of using this timeless, elegant and historic material. Through a lecture and field demonstration we'll cover different types of stone, construction methods, sources of materials, tools of the trade, and common mistakes. We'll focus mainly on walls and columns, and participants will walk away with an understanding of stone varieties (such as Chestnut Hill's own 'Wissahickon schist'), and types (quarried versus fieldstone). We'll explore cutting, shaping, safety, hand and power tools and the basics of both dry-laid and masonry construction. This course will have a two-part component: 90 minutes in the classroom, and 90 minutes in the field for demonstrations.
