Reduce Energy Use and Save Money

Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Efficiency Program

Ulta-Low Temperature freezers, also known as -70 and -80 degree freezers, use an enormous amount of energy in Penn lab buildings.  The Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) Freezer Efficiency Program was established in 2015 to reduce the number of old and under-utilized freezers and provide an incentivize for the purchase of highly efficient ULT freezers. The program includes incentives for both recycling existing freezers and purchasing new freezers. To date, Penn has recycled, replaced, or added more than 250 more efficient freezers. Rebates are subject to change based on current energy efficiencies available on the market and will be assessed based on date of application submission, not of freezer purchase. Rebate applications must be submitted within one year of freezer purchase. Contact sustainability@upenn.edu with any questions and to submit your rebate application.
